The start of college admissions for the 2023-24 academic year has seen a big increase in early applications. Already, 836,598 first-year candidates have applied, each sending an average of 4.01 applications. This surge amounts to an 18% rise, totaling 3,353,016 applications as of November 1 compared to the previous year's application season.

As colleges reveal their early decision and early action results, we'll explore outcomes from respected institutions, sharing insights for this year’s college application season.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT received a 12,563 early applications this year and accepted 5.26%, which is lower than last year's 5.7%. Among this pool, 661 students were accepted, while 8,052 were deferred, and 3,251 received rejection notices. Notably, 599 applications were withdrawn before decisions were finalized. With the regular application deadline set for January 4, aspiring students eagerly await the final admissions announcement in March.
Among the select 4% of colleges this application season, MIT stands firm in requiring SAT or ACT scores from both prospective first-year and transfer students. Notably, the Middle 50% score range of admitted students reflects exceptionally high test scores.

Stanford University
Stanford has historically kept its Early Action admissions data confidential. The last available data, from seven years ago for the Class of 2021, revealed a 9.24% admission rate for Early Action applicants, surpassing the 3.67% rate for Regular Decision applicants.
Considering the limited available data for Stanford's early action applications, prospective applicants should weigh their options thoughtfully. If Stanford stands as your top preference, Early Action could be a strategic choice, but be mindful of the university's highly selective nature, indicated by their tendency to defer only a small fraction of Restrictive Early Action applications to Regular Decision.

Brown University
Brown University accepted 14.4% early decision applicants to class 2028, an increase from last year's 12.98%, the lowest acceptance rate in the university's history. They welcomed 898 students from a pool of 6,244 early decision applicants. Notably, 16.8% of applicants received deferment notices, while 67.6% faced denials, and .93% of applications were incomplete.
3% of applicants, or 22 students, have been admitted to the Program in Liberal Medical Education, the University's integrated undergraduate and medical school program. Deadline for regular applications is on January 3, and the final admission announcements are expected to be issued out in early April.
Harvard University
For the Class of 2028, Harvard accepted 692 early applicants from a pool of 7,921, marking an admission rate of 8.74%. This rate shows a slight increase of over one percentage point compared to last year's early action acceptance rate of 7.56%. Among this year's pool, the majority 83.06% were deferred, while approximately 7.70% of applications were denied. Additionally, forty applicants chose to withdraw their applications.
The regular application deadline for Harvard is set on January 1st, with admission decisions anticipated in late March or early April.
Yale University
Yale University extended admission offers to 709 students from a pool of 7,856 early action applicants for the Class of 2028, resulting in a record-low early acceptance rate of 9.02%. This rate stands as the lowest in more than two decades within Yale's current non-binding early action program, surpassing the previous year's 10%. Among the applicant pool, 20% (1,531 students) were deferred to the regular decision round, while 70% (5,537 students) received denial notices. Additionally, 1% (79 students) either withdrew their applications or submitted incomplete ones.
Deadline for the regular applications is on January 2 and final admission announcements will be issued by April 1.
University of Pennsylvania
Penn has released its early decision results, with over 8,500 students applying through the Early Decision program this year—a notable increase from last year's 8,000 applicants. However, Penn has opted not to immediately disclose the acceptance rate for Early Decision applicants, adhering to its practice established since the regular decision admissions cycle for the Class of 2026. The deadline for regular applications is on January 5 and admission announcements are anticipated to be released in early April.
Williams College
On December 8, the College accepted 23.3% of the 1,068 early decision applicants for the Class of 2028, a decrease from last year's 27%. Among these, 249 students received admission, 155 were deferred to the regular decision round, and 658 were denied.
Regular application deadline for Williams College is on January 8 and applicants will receive their decision notice by April 1.
Barnard College
Barnard receives a record 1,694 early decision applicants for the Class of 2028. Among those admitted early, 17% are first-generation college students—up from 12% in the previous class. Historically, the majority of Barnard's incoming classes come from early decision applicants, with about 60-62% accepted through this route in recent years. The exact percentage for the Class of 2028 admitted through early decision hasn't been disclosed yet. The regular application deadline is on January 1 and decision are expected to be released in late March.
Duke University
Duke University admitted 806 students to the Class of 2028 after a record-breaking Early Decision round. With 6,240 applicants, surpassing previous rounds by over 1,000, the acceptance rate hit a historic low of 12.9% due to nearly a 30% increase in applications.
Among the 806 admitted students, 625 plan to join the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, while 181 have chosen the Pratt School of Engineering. All those admitted via the Early Decision cycle are obligated to enroll upon receiving their decision.
Deadline for Duke's regular application is set on January 2 and decisions will be released in late March or early April.
Boston University
Boston University released its initial round of early decision results for the Class of 2028, admitting 34.1% of applicants or 1,307 out of the 3,832 students. The university noted a rise in early decision applications from the previous year's 30%.
BU offers both early decision I and early decision II application options which are. Prospective students have until Jan. 4 to apply for early decision two or regular decision. The final admission announcements are expected in late March.
